I agree with Paul

Paul gave a very good review of the product and a great mini-lesson on how to use it.
It is a great little toy to play with and is a lot of fun. However, I am a teacher and had hoped to use it in a more serious manner in the classroom. I liked the idea of being able to make on-screen measurements and unfortunately, that is the most lacking feature of the product. With my version of software, I am able to enter in a magnification of 400 while making measurements. It was pretty accurate showing .97 mm for one tic mark on a ruler. I know my degree of accuracy in drawing the line was certainly not within .03 mm so I am happy with the results. The reason I am rating it a 3 is simply because of the difficulty in this measurement process. Because the measurements can only be made at 0 distance (i.e. the object at 0 distance from the end of the clear plastic ring) it limits the types of measurements that can be made. For example the field of view at x20 is about 13mm as Paul points out. If I want to take a picture of anything bigger than a dime (or even a dime) I can't do so because a dime is 18 mm in diameter and won't fit in the field of view. If I back off a little bit and refocus, I can get an entire dime in the image, but then I have no means of determining the actual magnification ratio. Because this limits my use in a school lab setting, other than just capturing images and video which in itself is useful, I rate it down to a three. In all fairness, I don't know the capabilities of competing products such as the high priced pro-scope so they may all work this way.
Another issue is the funky stand that comes with it. It is too short and inflexible to be useful. It really needs to be twice as long as it is with a second joint between the two arm segments. This would allow the user to actually position it in usable positions. A snake type stand would be better and I am looking for a trashed desk lamp to convert it into a stand. The base of the stand also needs to be weighted more heavily to keep the scope upright.
This is a fun scope to play with but these issues are really aggravating and take away from the true utility of the scope. It is a shame that Veho didn't take the extra step to make the zoom actually work and to make the stand more robust. It couldn't have added another $5 or $10 to the price of the product which I would have gladly paid to get a truly useful product.
For now, it is fun to play with and I am looking forward to the next generation of USB products.
quirky drivers for Windows XP

My computer has Windows XP Professional. I followed the instructions exactly and the software could not detect the microscope. I tried downloading the latest drivers from the Internet with no luck. I tried different USB ports which caused my USB mouse to stop working temporarily. I finally tried on a different computer in my office with the same OS and it worked perfectly - that will have to do. Once I got past all of that initial frustration I am pleased with the product given the price point.
Not perfect but cheap and fair picture

Needed to take some 400x micro-pictures of plants. Didn't get the holder stand as in the picture for this but instead received the flexi-stand like the other 200x microscopes for sale here at Amazon. Flexi-stand would work well for pics of stamps, coins, other flat articles that are flat and are not suspended like a plant. I'm going to need a gooseneck like stand to hold the microscope steady.
Colors are true, at least for greens, browns, clears/translucents and yellows. That's all I dealt with.
20x and 400x fixed focus only....There is NO zoom here. Focus is at either extreme end of the focusing travel of the focusing knob. A little free play allows fine focusing at either 20x or 400x. Both magnifications are only approximations from a crudely calibrated and marked focus knob.
There are 6 LEDs that light up the items with strong naturally looking white light that is also adjustable from full-on to full-off and anywhere between. The light strength adjustment knob barely extends out from the body and is somewhat a pain to dial in.
COMPLAINTS: Focus knob really difficult to use while trying not to move or shake it much. Same goes with the LED light level adjustment.
Software easy to load, works as advertised (but NOT zoom) and seems solid enough. May be a type of metallicized plastic alloy but seems solid enough with gentle care. Its not a toy nor can it be considered a professional quality microscope. But it does take amazing pictures for seventy bucks or so. Can't complain. It does what I've needed.
Pretty nice - overall

I think this is a pretty nice product for the money. Easy driver and software installation. The microscope is very user friendly with easy focus adjustment with your thumb after positioning the scope. The software is easy to use, and the scope produces a good quality image.
The only complaint I have is that the magnification increments don't appear to line up with magnification indicator. Using a millimeter ruler, I verified the actual magnification, which appears to be 20X. This is the only "flaw" I could find - causing me to give it 4 stars instead of 5 stars.
disappointed

I bought this as a gift for my father. So far, I am disappointed. The software is provided on a mini-CD rom, which is useless if you don't have a pop-out CD rom tray. So, I have not been able to install this software. I have contacted Veho to find out if they have the microscope driver and micro capture software available as a download from their web site.
Their website is useless. I clicked on the download section of their site and was greeted with a message stating that the quota of downloads had already been met for the day and I should try again later. This was my first visit to the site. I checked the FAQ section to see if there was info about obtaining the downloads some other way - there are no FAQs even posted on the site. I sent a technical request and am now waiting for a response.
If you don't have a pop-out CD tray, don't buy this product - you won't be able to load the software. While the mini-CD looks great with the product packaging, it isn't useable.
